The Stuff of Life

Ah, water. Clear, refreshing, and essential. It is one of the most important substances we put into our bodies. Vital to our digestive system, eight glasses a day is often recommended. Yet not all water is created equal. Some tap water carries inorganic minerals that the body cannot process. This “hard water” has even been found to contain traces of prescription drugs. Unfortunately, avoiding contaminants is not as simple as purchasing bottled waters since some, such as Dasani and Aquafina, are simply tap water. For the purest of the pure, there is distilled water.
Distilled water is devoid of any minerals, organic or inorganic. It is made by boiling water and then condensing the vapor that is released back into pure liquid form. The residues that the vapor leaves behind are the impurities such as bacteria and other contaminants often found in tap water. Although it has no taste, drinking distilled water can increase the body’s absorption of nutrients and the elimination of wastes, thereby acting as a cleanser.

However, while distilled water as an active absorber makes it the ultimate detoxification beverage, beware of drinking it excessively. The liquid is thought to rapidly absorb the carbon dioxide in the air, making it more acidic. Additionally, in flushing out unwanted contaminants in your body, distilled water may also take important minerals on its way. So, if you drink the purified water too often for too long, you put yourself at risk for mineral deficiencies. That being said, it is most certainly an excellent way to rid your body of toxins. But once that is accomplished, it is best to discontinue consumption.
