Got Milk?

The difference between organic and conventional milk is about as straightforward as it gets: organic implies cows grazing in an open field, free of hormones and antibiotics.  Or does it?  A few years ago, Horizon Organic (a brand of Dean Foods) and Aurora Organic Dairy (a provider of private-label milk to retailers including Wal-Mart and Costco) were investigated by the USDA due to complaints that they were not fully following this protocol.  Although both milk giants currently have the green light for producing milk as organic, Aurora still faces several class action law-suits.

Power Snack

For a healthy snack that doesn’t involve eating some man-made power bar concoction, try a handful of almonds.  Raw, organic, almonds to be exact.  Not only are they delicious, but their high protein content will tide you over until the next meal.  It is true that almonds are high in fat content, but most of  the fat is unsaturated.  In addition, the nuts are a good source of fiber, calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin-E, and other beneficial antioxidants.

almonds

Easy to eat and easy to keep.  A bag at the office, a container at home – store them everywhere and anywhere.  The next time you need a boost of energy or something to munch on before dinner, have a few raw almonds.  You won’t regret it.

Antibiotics work wonders against bacterial infections.  However, in their war against unwelcome bacteria, they often stomp on the “good” bacteria in our bodies as well.  This “good” bacteria is important to the balance of our immune system and general overall health.  Without it, you may be more susceptible to other infections and illness.  So, to ease the casualties of the good-guys, take a pro-biotic along with your antibiotic.  It will help to restore your body with the “good” bacteria that you may lose during your treatment.

Culturelle

My personal favorite pro-biotic is Culturelle. It can be found at most health food stores and drug stores;  I purchase mine at the local pharmacy.  Make sure to take it at least 4 hours before or after your antibiotic so that the supplement has the opportunity to work.  It can also be taken on a daily basis without antibiotics if you are interested in adding a pro-biotic to your diet.  Personally, I prefer to get my daily pro-biotics from organic yogurt.  Do what works best for you and your organic lifestyle.  Of course, in some cases, your body may be able to fend for itself against antibiotics, but why take the chance?  Better safe than sorry.

Green & Black’s, the maker of my favorite chocolate bar, now holds my heart in ice cream as well.  Yes, ice cream.  Specifically, chocolate ice cream (quite shocking, I know).  It tastes as if their chocolate bars were magically transformed into rich, full, creamy, and heavenly ice cream.  I guess in some ways that is what they did since their organic dark chocolate is an ingredient.  I actually find the ice cream so utterly delicious and wonderfully intense that I can not handle more than one-scoop – if that! – as a serving.

White Chocolate with Strawberries is another flavor, also made with their signature chocolate in addition to organic strawberry sauce.  And for you vanilla lovers, their Vanilla ice cream, which doesn’t contain chocolate, is made with real organic vanilla beans.  Yum.

Looking for a Smart Water alternative?  The distilled-water-plus-electrolytes formula can be enjoyed for the same price under a different label: Function Water.  A product sold by MD Drinks, Function Water is just one of the many beverages made by the company.  Just as its competitor, Smart Water’s creator Glaceau, sells Vitamin Water, MD Drinks produces a line of flavored waters called Function Drinks.  Each beverage is “physician-developed” and contains different ingredients meant for – you guessed it – a specific function.  The goal of the drinks is to incorporate the benefits of natural ingredients used in medicine into a beverage.

Function Water

For example, Function Light Weight is a low-calorie drink for the diet-conscious. It contains ingredients thought to promote weight loss including the catechin found in green tea EGCG, the herb gymnema, and the red-wine extract resveratrol.  Another drink, Function Urban Detox may help clear sinuses and cure a hangover due to its ingredients N-Acetyl Cysteine and prickly pear fruit extract, respectively.  Other beverages include Function Brainiac for increased mental performance, Function Night Life to promote sexual health, and Function Shock Sports to help with muscle recovery.  A complete list of drinks can be found on the Function Drinks website.

While the concept is entertaining, I am a firm believer in absorbing nutrients from the source.  For the benefits of green tea extracts, drink green tea; for a sharper mind, take a power nap and say no to drugs.  Eating healthy and exercising daily will help you stay in shape more than a “physician-developed” beverage.  And if you’re looking to help muscle recovery, a physical therapist will offer more insight than flavored water.  Overall, I find the Function Drinks too gimmicky to be taken seriously.  However, if you want to drink electrolyte-enhanced distilled water without joining the Smart Water club, Function Water is a perfect substitute.

While I may praise Glaceau for providing consumers with distilled electrolyte-enhanced Smart Water, their Vitamin Water is a waste of shelf space.  The beverage is just as gimmicky as Function Drinks.

Vitamin Water may be colorful with cute labels that promise benefits from specific vitamins upon drinking, but it is chock-full of processed sugar, “natural” flavor, and food coloring.  Most of the drinks contain crystalline fructose, a fancy name for refined sugar containing arsenic, lead, and chloride.  I don’t know about you, but I prefer to take my vitamins without harmful contaminants.  Furthermore, the best way to absorb vitamins is from original sources.  So, drinking Power-C, Defense, Balance, or Essential Vitamin Water isn’t going to do much for your daily vitamin-C quota.  Try eating an orange or taking a walk outside instead.

Vitamin Water

Other Vitamin Water Drinks include Focus with vitamin-A, Endurance with vitamin-E, Energy with vitamin-B, and Multi-V which is like a liquid multi-vitamin.  The vitamins in each of the drinks mentioned have natural alternatives.  Eggs and spinach are rich in vitamin-A and almonds are a great snack for vitamin-E. Fish, chicken, and beans all carry vitamin-B and as far as a multi-vitamin goes, try to have a well-balanced diet that doesn’t require a supplement if possible.

Vitamin EnergyGlaceau took their creative minds one step further and developed Vitamin Energy: vitamins and caffeine in a can.  So maybe they’ve one-up’ed Red Bull with the vitamin supplement, but stick to organic tea or coffee for an energy boost.  Once again, the vitamins found in the drink are better-off absorbed from their original sources.

Overall, I commend Glaceau for clever packaging, its website design, and successful marketing.  Good for them for making a profit off of compartmentalizing Mother Nature.  However, you can’t fool your body.  If you want to increase your Vitamin intake take a look at your diet, not the beverage aisle.

Urinary Tract Infections are as unpleasant as they can be dangerous.  If not treated or diagnosed in time, bladder and/or kidney infection may result.  If you have ever had a UTI before, if you are prone to them, or if you never want one, taking a dietary supplement like CranActin is an excellent decision.

CranActin

Containing 400 mg of cranberry extract per capsule or chewable, CranActin promotes a healthy urinary tract.  One pill can be taken daily, up to four times a day.  Sexual intercourse often triggers UTI’s in women, so taking one or two before or after the fact is a good way to prevent infection.

CranActin is a product of Solaray and can be found at a pharmacy or health food store.
